Tell us a little about your business and what it offers the community.

Fairweather Fish Co. is a husband and wife owned and operated fishing team. We spend half our year harvesting seafood on the waters of Southeast Alaska, and the other half distributing our catch to families and restaurants in the Treasure Valley. We offer our community a direct connection to the ocean and its resources: our customers get the opportunity to know who harvested their fish, plus how, when, and where it was harvested from!

Could you tell us a little more about your fishing process?

The majority of our fish is caught using hook and line, in a fishery called "power trolling". In power trolling, we drag 4 - 6 lines behind our boat, and each line is outfitted with 5 - 20 hooks. We use artificial lures to attract fish, and reel our lines in using hydraulic motors. After being landed, our fish are immediately headed, gutted, and gently IV bled. They're meticulously cleaned on our deck, before being placed in our fish hold's powerful blast freezer.

What is the most unique item you offer?

Probably the most unique item we offer is our spot prawns; especially the female ones. Spot prawns are large, sweet, succulent shrimp -- though they taste less like shrimp, and more like tiny lobsters. Female spot prawns have the added bonus of roe (aka tiny eggs) on the bellies. When cooked with the roe on, it adds a rich, decadent ocean flavor!
